A disturbing mis-remembrance

Some years ago, Susan and I used to go to France for a few days break. On the instance in question we went to Avignon, which was achieved via Eurostar to Paris and TGV to our destination. I have for many years retained a memory of photographing a cruise ship on the river and seeing a lady waving for the benefit of my camera.

Thinking things over this morning, I decided to look for this photograph, as I remembered the ship and just where she was standing. This was in the lower dark area in the ship depicted below. When I pulled up this shot I discovered, to my consternation, that there was no-one where I remembered this lady to be! This photograph was taken in August 2012.

Having realised that my long-held memory was inaccurate, I carried out another search of my photographs. I remembered that we had been to Avignon the previous year. And we had returned because I had discovered a haunt of Hummingbird hawk-moths, which were drinking their fill of nectar from red-valerian, which was growing among fallen rocks. It was my intention to try to get some shots of these lovely insects.

To return to my story, I discovered quite quickly, that my memory had been amiss in several regards. I found the lady waving to me, as were, I now see, other passengers. These people were on a different area of a different cruise ship, sailing in the opposite direction in a different year! I’m just glad I didn’t have to stand up in court and swear to the veracity of my memory!
