Words fail me

On my wife’s route to work there is a narrow, single lane bridge, traffic-light controlled, which conducts road traffic under a railway. On this particular morning I received an email from Susan saying she had been twenty minutes late for work because the bridge at High Brooms had been closed without notice. “Will you find out what the hell is going on?”

I phoned Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and was told this was the responsibility of Kent County Council, Highways Dept. to which I was duly transferred. After a considerable delay the phone was answered by a female, “Kent Highways”. “Can you tell me” I asked, “why the railway bridge at High Brooms, Tunbridge Wells, was closed without notice this morning?” “Railway bridge?” she replied, “that’s nothing to do with us, we deal with roads!”
