One of our favourite areas, in our caravanning days, was the beautiful and spectacular Elan Valley, in mid-Wales. The river Elan has been dammed at several points near the town of Rhayader, in order to provide a water supply for Birmingham. The resultant lakes have enhanced the already lovely countryside and provided scenery to equal any to be found in Britain.
It must have been in the 1970s, whilst we were making one of our regular visits to the area, when I visited a public loo in Rhayader. I was sitting in one of the cubicles, contemplating the meaning of life etc., when I noticed several long pencilled arrows on the door, pointing downwards. My eyes unwittingly followed them down, until, just above the usual gap at the bottom of the door, was scrawled the warning “Beware of limbo dancers!” Anyone using the toilet at that time must have wondered what was going on in that cubicle, as I laughed aloud when I read the graffiti.
