Fruitcake

Last Autumn I bought new glasses from Specsavers in Tonbridge. Unfortunately this was not a smooth and straightforward operation and resulted in my making repeated visits to the shop, before I was finally satisfied with my purchase. As a result I came to know several of the young ladies on the staff quite well.

I was sitting in the shop one day, quietly waiting my turn, and was aware that an elderly man and his wife were seated just behind me. A young lady at the reception desk called across to ask him if he was being attended to. “Yes thank you” he replied “but I don’t know where she’s got to! I only came in to have my nuts tightened up!” I didn’t dare to catch the eye of the girl, in case she was trying as hard as I was to keep a straight face. After a short while, he addressed her again in a loud, upper-crust voice “You understand, we are going on holiday next week, and I don’t want my nuts to drop orf while we’re abroad!”

When Lisa, who was adjusting my specs, came back, I told her, quietly, of this gentleman’s concerns! When she was able to speak again we agreed that this could be very inconvenient for him!
